About this scholarship

Canada-UK Foundation Doctoral Studentship

You will receive £2,000 per year (about 2,350 EUR) for a full-time PhD programme. The scholarship may be extended for up to 3 years of full-time study, or the equivalent duration for part-time study. Part-time students receive a reduced amount. The scholarship supports PhD research with a strong Canadian focus at a UK university, such as projects rooted in Canadian society, culture, politics or the arts. Funding is provided by the Canada-UK Foundation, a charitable organisation based at Canada House on Trafalgar Square in London, which promotes relations between Canada and the United Kingdom.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a PhD student.
  • University: You are enrolled at a British university that is able to supervise Canadian studies and has the necessary resources for your topic.
  • Research topic: Your doctoral thesis has a significant Canadian focus.
  • Field of study: Any topic is fine, provided your research project has a clear connection to Canada.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You cannot apply yourself. Your UK university will put you forward, so you will need to contact your department or your supervisor. The Foundation does not accept direct applications from individuals.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective. Your research must focus on Canada, you must be a PhD student at a UK university, and your university must nominate you. As a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small. If your project has a clear Canadian focus and your department supports you, your chances are good. As everything goes through your university, discussing the nomination with your supervisor at an early stage is the crucial step.
