About this scholarship

What the Henry Brown Bequest is

This is a fund run by the University of London which finances research in the field of ancient Greek, i.e. the Ancient Greek language and its ancient texts. The funds are channelled to the Institute of Classical Studies, a research centre within the University’s School of Advanced Study. The Institute decides how the funds are to be used for teaching and research in this field. The fund was established in 1927 following a donation to the University. The exact amount and the duration of the funding are not disclosed.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You must be enrolled at the University of London. The fund provides support exclusively to its own institutions.
  • Subject: Your thesis must focus on Ancient Greek language and literature.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • How you get it: The funds are allocated to the departments, not to individual students. If your department receives funds from this source, please contact it directly.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this funding independently, and it is tied to a specific subject area at a particular university. It is therefore aimed only at a small group of students who are already studying Ancient Greek there. If you belong to this group, check with your department to see whether it receives funding from this fund and how it is allocated. Think of it as a potential additional benefit provided through your university, rather than a scholarship that you receive directly.
