Benefit

You will receive about 17,250 EUR per year (£15,000) for your research work as part of your postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. The funding covers the entire duration of your studies, meaning that a PhD can be funded for up to three years. It is paid by New College, one of the colleges at Oxford. The funding comes from the 1379 Society, an association of the college’s former students named after the year the college was founded. Only one scholarship is awarded each year.

Eligibility

• Degree: You are applying for a full-time postgraduate research programme, such as a DPhil (the University of Oxford’s term for a PhD).
• College: When applying to Oxford, please list New College as your first choice.
• Timing: You are starting a new degree programme. If you are already studying for a degree, you cannot apply.
• Field of study: All research participants are welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Grades: The prize is awarded to the best candidates, so you will need to have an outstanding academic record.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. All applicants who have been offered a place at New College will automatically be considered. Your application must be received by the University in Oxford by the deadline in January. New College aims to make its decisions on places by the end of May.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, to the best research proposal – so competition is fierce. There are no restrictions: students from any subject and of any nationality can apply, provided they are offered a place at New College and list it as their first choice. The key is to secure a place at Oxford and demonstrate academic excellence, as the scholarship is then awarded automatically.
