Oxford-Swire Graduate Scholarship

For a Master’s degree in History at the University of Oxford, you will receive full funding. This will cover 100% of your university and college fees, plus a grant of approximately 16,000 EUR per year towards your living costs. The funding covers the entire duration of your studies: up to 36 months for a three-year DPhil (Oxford’s doctoral degree) or one year for a one-year MSt (a taught Master’s degree). Two scholarships are awarded each year, one for the DPhil and one for the MSt. Funding is provided jointly by the University of Oxford and the Sir John Swire Family Foundation, and is tied to University College Oxford (‘Univ’), where the Swire family has a long tradition of studying history.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for a full-time degree programme (DPhil or MSt) in History at the University of Oxford.
• Field of study: Just history, at the Faculty of History.
• College: If you win, you will be offered a place at University College, Oxford. You can specify any college on your application form and your application will still be considered.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Study mode: Full-time degree programmes only. Part-time degree programmes and deferred offers of admission are not permitted.
• Grades: You will need very good academic results, as selection is based on academic performance.
• Renewal: As part of the DPhil programme, your funding will only be continued each year if you make satisfactory academic progress.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. You will automatically be considered if you submit your application form for the Master’s programme in History at the University of Oxford by the deadline in January (24 January). If you are subsequently placed on the waiting list or re-assessed when the March deadline expires, you will no longer be eligible to participate.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective. Only applicants studying History at the University of Oxford are eligible, and only two scholarships are awarded each year. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but the bar is set high, as selection is based on academic merit in comparison with the strong field of applicants from Oxford. Please ensure that your application form is submitted by the January deadline, as applicants who apply after this date will be excluded from the selection process.
