About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive at least 875 EUR (£750) per year as a contribution towards your costs, as well as a comprehensive package of first-class golf support during your studies. As a member of the ‘Performance Golf Squad’, you will train with strength and conditioning coaches and physiotherapists, and receive support in the areas of nutrition and sports psychology. During the academic term (October to June), you can join Edgbaston Golf Club to use the course and practice facilities. You’ll take part in the BUCS Tour and the R&A Student Tour Series at golf courses across the UK. You will also be invited to the annual R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament in St Andrews, which is played over 54 holes. There, the top male player wins a place in the European Palmer Cup team to compete against the USA, and the top female player wins a place in a Ladies European Tour event. Funding is provided by the R&A Foundation, the governing body of golf. It supports 17 universities worldwide, and Birmingham selects around 8 players for its squad each year.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Birmingham (or another university supported by the R&A).
  • Level: You are studying for a degree. The funding may cover the entire duration of your studies, up to 48 months.
  • Golf standard, men: You play with a handicap of +1 or better.
  • Golf standard, women: You play with a handicap of 2 or better.
  • National team route: If you have been selected for a national team or squad, you can apply even if you do not have this disability.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Open to players from all over the world.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the R&A, not directly to the university. The application period runs from August to September each year, and the form is available on the R&A’s website.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at a small group: high-level competitive golfers with a very low handicap who are also full-time students. If you play at this level and are enrolled at a funded university, you belong to this small group and have good prospects. If your handicap is higher, joining a national team or a national squad is the most realistic route to achieving this.
