About this scholarship

The Sheila Cannell Postgraduate Award

You will receive a one-off payment of about 2,340 EUR (£2,000) for one academic year on the Master’s programme in History. As this is a partial scholarship, it covers only part of your costs, not the entire academic year. The University of Edinburgh awards one such scholarship each year through its School of History, Classics and Archaeology.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are starting a one-year full-time Master’s degree in History at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Field of study: A history programme within the Department of History, Classical Philology and Archaeology.
  • Your place: You have been offered a place at university, which you have accepted or intend to accept.
  • Enrolment: You study full time.
  • Grades: You hold a British first-class honours degree or an equivalent qualification from another country, or are expected to obtain one.
  • Nationality: You are from the UK or the EU.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the University of Edinburgh’s scholarship system. The deadline for applications was 26 March. There is no separate nomination stage. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit, and the results will be announced in May or June.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, and it goes to someone with a first-class degree – so the bar is set high. Due to the narrow focus – a Master’s degree in History at a single university for students from the UK and the EU – the pool of applicants is small, meaning that a strong candidate who clearly meets the criteria has a genuine chance of success. Please note that funding is not confirmed every year; therefore, make sure the scholarship is still being awarded before you count on it.
