About this scholarship
What the Sir Philip Reckitt travel grant gives you
You will receive a grant towards your travel and accommodation costs, as well as the costs of an educational trip in the United Kingdom or abroad. There is no fixed amount. The trustees determine the amount of each grant and distribute the funds amongst as many applicants as possible, so the grants are modest and are primarily intended to cover your travel costs. The trip must have a clear educational purpose, such as learning a language, studying business administration or social work, learning about the customs of another country, or attending a conference, a lecture or a course. The Foundation was established in 1944 by Sir Philip Reckitt, the former chairman of Reckitt and Sons Ltd, and is a registered charity. The grant does not cover the costs of the event itself or your regular commute to work.
Who can apply
- Where you live: You live in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire or in the county of Norfolk. This is the key eligibility criterion. The exact areas are marked on maps on the foundation’s website.
- Who you are: You are applying as an individual or as a group of named individuals. Applications from organisations, associations, expedition groups or charities will not be accepted.
- Student or not: You can apply regardless of whether you are a student or not. School pupils, students at universities of applied sciences, university students and non-students are all equally welcome.
- Reference: Your headteacher, dean, university or employer must endorse your application. Without a letter of recommendation, the Foundation Board will not consider your application.
- Purpose: Your trip has a genuine educational purpose, for example in the field of languages, business practices, social services or the customs of another country.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: Any nationality. It just depends on where you live.
How to apply
You should submit your application using the official form for your region and send it to the relevant office for Hull and East Riding or Norfolk. There is no fixed annual deadline, but your application must be received at least six weeks before your planned travel date. The trustees do not usually support repeat applications for the same activity.
How realistic are your chances?
Due to the geographical restrictions, the pool of eligible applicants is very limited: only people living in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire or in Norfolk may apply, so the number of applicants is small. The trustees wish to help as many applicants as possible with their modest funding. If you live in one of these areas, have a specific educational trip planned and can provide a supporting reference, your chances are good. Please apply in good time before the six-week application deadline expires.
