Fred Sinowatz Award (Province of Burgenland)

For an outstanding academic publication or research project on Burgenland in eastern Austria, you will receive a one-off prize of 5,000 EUR. The province awards this prize once a year to recognise outstanding academic work on the history, politics, culture, natural environment and society of the region. This is a prize for completed works, not a monthly scholarship. A panel of experts selects the winners.

Who can apply

• What you submit: A completed academic publication or research project on the subject of Burgenland.
• Topic: Your work focuses on the history, politics, culture, natural environment or society of Burgenland. It may be in the humanities, social sciences or natural sciences.
• Field of study: Any subject area is suitable, as long as it relates to Burgenland.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• University: You can apply, no matter where you’re studying or working.

How to apply

You submit your publication or project description via an online form. The deadline for applications is 30 September. A jury comprising experts from the fields of the humanities, natural sciences and economics selects the prize-winners, who are honoured at the annual Science Gala.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize focuses entirely on a single theme: serious academic work on the Burgenland region. This keeps the pool of applicants manageable. So if you have a compelling, completed publication or research project on this region, you stand a real chance. As this is a single prize awarded by a jury, it is the quality of the work itself that counts above all else.
