About this award / prize

Benefit

For a completed academic thesis on an environmental topic relevant to Vienna, you will receive a cash prize of up to 700 EUR as well as an official certificate from the City of Vienna. The prize is awarded by the City of Vienna’s Environmental Protection Office (MA 22). In collaboration with the Vienna Water Authority (MA 31), a special ‘Water’ prize is also awarded under the same conditions, with particular emphasis on work relating to water supply, urban water management, and climate change and water. The award-winning theses will be published on the authority’s website and held at the Vienna City Library.

Eligibility

  • What you submit: A completed academic thesis, such as a diploma thesis, a Master’s thesis or a doctoral thesis. Dissertations and diploma theses must already have been marked and approved.
  • Topic: Your work focuses on an environmental issue relevant to Vienna or the Vienna region, such as urban adaptation to climate change, biodiversity, resource conservation and waste prevention, sustainable food systems or water.
  • Who submits: Only the author themselves may apply, stating their own name. Organisations may not apply.
  • Age of the work: Your dissertation was completed no more than 5 years ago.
  • Language: Your dissertation must be written in German or English. The one-page summary must be written in German.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Field of study: Open to contributions from the natural sciences, engineering, economics and the social sciences, provided the topic is relevant.

How to apply

You must submit your final thesis, a one-page summary in German, your CV and proof of your academic qualification between 1 March and 30 September. A panel of experts from the City of Vienna and Viennese educational institutions will assess the entries; their decision is final. The winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony, which usually takes place in late October or early November.
