About this scholarship

Scholarships for holiday traineeships in Austrian media

You will receive a one-off grant of 400 EUR for a one-month summer placement at an Austrian news organisation. The grant supplements the salary paid to you by your media organisation; it does not replace it. The grant is provided by the Austrian Media Academy (ÖMA, formerly the Board of Trustees for Journalist Training), which has been training journalists since 1978 and runs this programme to help students get started in journalism.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: You are a national of an EU country.
  • The placement: You have received a written offer for a one-month work placement at an Austrian media organisation in July, August or September. This could be at a daily or weekly newspaper, a radio station or a television channel.
  • Workshop: Before the work placement begins, you will take part in a one-day preparatory workshop in Vienna. The scholarship will not be paid out unless you attend this workshop.

How to apply

Applications to the Media Academy must be submitted by email by 2 May. Please attach the application form, a certificate of enrolment, confirmation of your work placement from the media company and your CV. The scholarships will be awarded after the application deadline. Applicants who have not yet received any funding will be given priority.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly defined: you must be an EU student at an Austrian higher education institution and have a confirmed placement in an Austrian newsroom, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. Priority is given to applicants who have not yet received any funding, and awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Applying early is therefore clearly to your advantage. If you have already secured an internship placement and submit your application shortly after the application period opens, your chances are good.
