About this scholarship

Mannagetta Fellowships

You receive 25,000 EUR for 12 months to finish your doctoral thesis. This is a "super gross" sum, meaning it covers your living costs while you write up but nothing extra for travel or printing. If you hand in your dissertation early, you can use the time left to prepare publications. The fellowship comes from the private Johann Wilhelm Ritter von Mannagetta Foundation and is run by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a doctoral (PhD) candidate working on your thesis.
  • Field of study: Your subject is archaeology, prehistory and early history, ancient or medieval history, art history, music history, philosophy, or law.
  • University: You are enrolled in a doctoral programme at a university in Austria.
  • Timing: You started your doctoral studies no more than three years before the deadline, and you need at most 12 more months to finish.
  • Thesis by publication: If your doctorate is made up of published papers, you have already published enough to finish the thesis within the funding year.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you study at an Austrian university.
  • Exceptions: The three-year limit can be relaxed for care duties, illness or disability. Clear this with the OeAW before you apply.

How to apply

You register and submit your documents through the OeAW online form, in German or English. You need a CV with publication list, a supervisor's statement, proof of your degrees, and a 10 to 15 page description of your dissertation project. The deadline is 20 October 2026 at 2 p.m. CEST. A committee reviews all applications in writing, which takes about four to five months. There is no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This fellowship is narrowly cut: only doctoral candidates in a few humanities and law fields, at an Austrian university, and close to finishing can apply. That keeps the applicant pool small. If you clearly fit those conditions and your project and track record are strong, your prospects are solid. The committee compares applications on academic record and project quality, so a well-argued project description and a convincing supervisor statement matter most.
