About this scholarship

What you get

For a teaching placement lasting 5 months at a university abroad, you will receive monthly grant of 600 to 1,600 EUR. You will teach German as a foreign language for 6 to 8 hours per week. The exact amount depends on the cost of living in your destination country. Online placements in Ukraine are remunerated at 770 EUR per month and last for 5 months. The grant is intended as a subsidy, so you will need additional funds of your own. You must also use these to cover your accommodation, insurance and any visa or vaccination costs. You will receive it as a one-off lump sum approximately one week before your departure, and it is tax-free in Austria. Around 40 places are offered each year. The programme is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research and administered by the OeAD agency.

Who can apply

  • Field of study: You are studying German as a foreign or second language (DaF/DaZ), German language and literature, or are training to become a German teacher. Students on certificate courses at the University of Vienna’s Postgraduate Centre are also eligible to take part.
  • University: You are enrolled at the University of Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt or Innsbruck.
  • Active study: You have earned at least 8 ECTS credits in the last semester or are actively involved in research.
  • German skills: Your knowledge of German is good enough to teach German, including the Austrian variant.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at one of the five Austrian universities.
  • Age: No age limit.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online at scholarships.at. The application window opens on 1 December 2025 and the deadline for applications is 15 February 2026. Selection is based on your application documents. The University of Vienna will review and assess these, and the Ministry will make the final decision. If you are accepted, you must attend a preparatory session at the University of Vienna during the summer term before your departure.

How realistic are your chances?

This placement is aimed at a narrowly defined group. You must be studying a subject at one of the five Austrian universities listed that focuses on German language teaching, and be able to provide evidence of either examination or research activities; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. With approximately 40 places available each year for this specific group of applicants, a well-suited candidate with a compelling personal statement and good DaF/DaZ results stands a good chance of success. Submitting an application as soon as the application period opens can only be to your advantage.
