About this award / prize
mdw Merit Prize (Würdigungspreis)
You will receive a one-off prize of 1,000 EUR and a certificate, which will be presented to you at a ceremony in November. The award is presented by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw). It recognises graduates for outstanding achievements throughout their studies. This is a one-off award and not a monthly scholarship; therefore, there is no fixed duration of funding. Each year, the mdw selects between 10 and 19 award winners.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are a graduate of the mdw in Vienna.
- Degree: You have completed a diploma, bachelor’s or master’s degree at the mdw.
- Result: You graduated ‘with distinction’ and achieved excellent results throughout your degree, not just at the end.
- Field of study: Any mdw subject counts, from instrumental and vocal studies, conducting and composition to music education, film, drama, music therapy and ethnomusicology.
- Nationality and age: No restrictions. The prize is open to all mdw graduates.
How to apply
There is no application process. The mdw Examinations Office compiles a list of graduates from the previous academic year who have completed their studies with distinction. A committee comprising deans and heads of department draws up a ranking list, and the Vice-Rector’s Office selects the award winners. If you are selected, you will simply be informed – often completely out of the blue.
How realistic are your chances?
You cannot apply for this prize or promote it, so there is nothing to submit and no deadline to meet. Your only asset is your academic performance. If you complete your degree at the mdw with distinction and outstanding results in every year of study, you will be included on the list from which the selection committee makes its choice. As only around 10 to 19 graduates are honoured each year, the selection process remains rigorous, but a consistently outstanding academic record is exactly what will put you in the spotlight.
