About this scholarship
Support for congress visits abroad (University of Salzburg)
During your PhD, you will receive a subsidy towards a conference trip abroad. This covers your travel and accommodation costs, as well as the registration fee for the event. There is no set upper limit: you pay the costs yourself initially and will be reimbursed after your trip, once you have submitted your receipts. The funding is provided by the Department of International Relations at the University of Salzburg, which supports PhD students who attend conferences, congresses, symposia or workshops abroad as part of their doctoral research. Laboratory supplies, IT equipment, books or communication costs are not covered.
Who can apply
- Degree: You are a PhD student at the University of Salzburg and have not yet obtained a doctoral degree either in Austria or abroad.
- How far you are: You must have completed at least two semesters of your doctoral studies before the scholarship is paid out.
- No university job: As you do not have an employment contract with the University of Salzburg, project staff and lecturers are not eligible to apply.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Where you live: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided that your main place of residence is in Austria. You may not take part in a conference held in the country of which you are a national.
- Active role at the event: You must play an active part, for example by giving a talk, presenting a poster, taking part in a formal discussion or chairing a session. Simply being present is not enough.
- Type of event: The event lasts for a maximum of one week, including travel days. Courses, summer schools and other events that focus on professional development are not taken into account.
- How often: One grant per year of study, and at most two events across your whole PhD.
How to apply
You apply to the International Relations Department in Salzburg with the application form, your study record, the event programme, proof that your contribution was accepted and a reference from your thesis advisor. There are two deadlines each year: 31 January and 30 June.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a PhD student at this specific university, be resident in Austria and be able to demonstrate that you have had a paper accepted and are due to present it at a short conference abroad. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small; so, if you clearly meet these conditions, your chances are good. As the amount of funding depends on your actual costs rather than a fixed budget, a clear breakdown of costs and the support of your supervisor are crucial.
