About this scholarship
Klaus Wolff Fellowship at Harvard Medical School
You will receive about 7,360 EUR (US$ 8,000), including travel costs for a 3-month research stay at the Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. You will receive the scholarship when you take up your post in Boston. It is awarded by the Austrian Society for Dermatology and Venereology (ÖGDV). It will enable you to learn research methods in dermatology and cutaneous pathobiology (the study of the aetiology of skin diseases) and subsequently to continue this work in your home country, Austria.
Who can apply
- Your job: You are a doctor undergoing specialist training in dermatology and venereology in Austria.
- Field: Your research centres on dermatology and dermatopathology, with a particular focus on the pathobiology of the skin.
- Harvard tutor: A tutor at Harvard Medical School confirms that your project can be carried out at their clinic or laboratory and that they will supervise you whilst you are working on it.
- Austrian backing: The head of your institute, department or clinic in Austria confirms that you are able to continue and complete the project from home.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are currently undertaking specialist training in dermatology in Austria.
How to apply
Please send your CV, your age, a brief project description and the two letters of recommendation to the ÖGDV Secretariat by 31 December. A committee will then select a candidate. This committee comprises the heads of the dermatology departments at the four Austrian medical universities (Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg) and the ÖGDV President. The department at Harvard will confirm the selection.
How realistic are your chances?
When this scholarship is advertised, the pool of applicants is very limited: each year, only one doctor who is currently undertaking specialist training in dermatology in Austria is selected, and applicants must already have a confirmed supervisor at Harvard University before applying. If you fit this profile and have already found a supervisor, the small pool of applicants works in your favour. Securing confirmation from Harvard is the real hurdle. Please note that the ÖGDV currently lists this scholarship as suspended, so it may not be advertised in the current round.
