The University of Graz - Graz International Summer School Seggau - Transformation and Change: Europe and Beyond

What GUSEGG offers

You will be taking part in a two-week international summer school at Seggau Castle, a castle situated approximately 40 km south of Graz in Austria, which takes place from 5 to 18 July 2026. The University of Graz is organising the programme, which explores in English how Europe and America are changing in the fields of politics, society and religion. You will attend lectures in the mornings and evenings, panel discussions and afternoon seminars in small groups, together with around 80 students and 20 lecturers from all over the world. Upon full attendance, you will receive 6 ECTS credits (the European Credit Transfer System credits that count towards your degree) or up to 16 ECTS if you take part in optional workshops. You will receive an official certificate from the University of Graz, which you can have recognised as part of your home degree programme.

This is a fee-paying programme, not a scholarship. The flat-rate fee for 2026 is 2,500 EUR and covers tuition fees, accommodation, all meals and the social programme. Students from Arqus partner universities pay 1,900 EUR, with a discount of 600 EUR available, limited to two students per Arqus university. There are a number of funding opportunities: the David Herzog Fund offers seven students from the Department of Jewish Studies a discount of 600 EUR on the fee, as well as up to 850 EUR towards travel expenses, and some partner universities cover the costs of participation for their own students.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are a student in the final stages of your Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s student or a graduate.
• Field of study: Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply, although the focus is on the humanities and social sciences.
• Language: You can follow the lectures in English and take part in the discussions.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The students come from all over the world.
• Motivation: You would like to deepen your understanding of current European and international issues.

How to apply

You apply directly. You do not need a nomination from your home university, except in the case of specific partner programmes. First, send an email to the organisers stating your name, date of birth, email address, country, home university, field of study and level of study. You will then receive a link to the application platform. The application deadline is 15 February.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an open, fee-paying summer school, not a competitive scholarship. If you meet the entry requirements, apply in good time and can afford the fee, your chances of securing a place are good. The real hurdle is the cost of 2,500 EUR. The number of participants is limited to around 80 students, so please apply early.
