Rudi Roth Scholarship (University of Graz)

You will receive a one-off grant of approximately 1,000 to 3,500 EUR to fund a research trip abroad as part of your final-year dissertation. The funding covers fieldwork, research in archives and libraries, or other practical research activities in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The grant is funded by Rudi Roth, a Graz graduate and entrepreneur who has been supporting the university since 2001. Several grants are awarded each year.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Graz. Some scholarships are also awarded to students at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
• Type of work: You are writing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diplom thesis, a doctoral thesis or a habilitation thesis (if you are employed at the University of Graz).
• Topic: Your work must have a clear connection to Eastern or South-Eastern Europe. This is the essential requirement.
• Field of study: All academic departments. To date, funding has been awarded to, amongst others, law, economics, history, English studies and the social sciences.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of Graz by 1 March. A selection panel will review the applications and select the scholarship recipients.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. You must be studying in Graz and your final dissertation must focus on Eastern or South-Eastern Europe, so the pool of eligible applicants is small. As a rule, only four to eight scholarships are awarded each year. If your topic relates to this region and you can explain why the trip abroad is necessary, your chances are good.
