Adalbert-Stifter Grant of the Province of Upper Austria

You will receive a one-off grant of 6,550 EUR to work on a major literary project. This is a working grant designed to give you time to write, rather than to fund a finished book. All genres are eligible: poetry, prose, drama, radio plays and more. Up to two grants are awarded per cycle by the Province of Upper Austria, which runs the programme every two years.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are the author and the lawful creator of the work you have submitted.
• Connection to Upper Austria: You were born there, or have had your permanent residence there for at least four years and the centre of your life is there.
• Field: All literary genres are permitted.
• Your project: You are currently working on a more extensive literary work which has not yet been completed or published.
• Age: No age limit.

How to apply

Please submit your application by 30 September, either by email to the Provincial Cultural Office or by post, marked ‘Adalbert Stifter Scholarships’. Please include details of yourself, your previous work and a project description with sample pages from your manuscript. An independent three-member jury will assess the submissions and recommend who should receive a scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very strictly defined: only authors who were born in Upper Austria or have lived there for a long time are eligible, and only two scholarships are awarded every two years. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but because of the limited number of places, competition amongst eligible candidates is fierce. A clear, detailed project description with meaningful text samples is what wins over the jury.
