About this scholarship

Aktion Österreich-Ungarn PhD research grant (Austria to Hungary)

You will receive 330 EUR per month for a research stay in Hungary of up to 9 months. The scholarship is aimed at PhD students at an Austrian university who wish to carry out research at a Hungarian institution. The scholarship is administered by the ‘Aktion Österreich-Ungarn’ Foundation, which promotes academic exchange between the two countries. The Austrian Ministry of Science and the OeAD support this initiative. You may carry out your research at any state-recognised Hungarian university, within the Eötvös Loránd Research Network, or at institutions such as the Hungarian National Museum, the National Archives or the Széchényi National Library.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a PhD student.
  • Where you study now: You are enrolled at an Austrian university, university of applied sciences, teacher-training college or private university.
  • Where you go: You are conducting research at a recognised Hungarian university or research institution.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Age: You are no older than 35.
  • Language: You speak enough Hungarian to carry out your research.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online at scholarships.at, and all documents must be submitted in German. There are four application deadlines each year: 15 March, 15 May, 30 October and 15 December. The Foundation’s scholarship committee will review your documents and select the scholarship recipients. You will receive a response a few weeks after the relevant deadline has passed.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is quite restrictive: you must be a PhD student based in Austria who is travelling specifically to Hungary, and you must have a knowledge of Hungarian. The target group is therefore small. If you meet these criteria and have a confirmed Hungarian host, your chances are good. The language requirement, in particular, ensures that the pool of applicants remains limited compared to open research grants.
