About this award / prize

Hetherington Prize for best DPhil talk

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 126 EUR (£100). This prize is awarded to the PhD student who delivers the best research presentation in their second year of study at the Department of Materials Science at the University of Oxford. ‘DPhil’ is the University of Oxford’s term for a PhD, so this is a prize at doctoral level. It recognises not only the research itself, but also the quality of the presentation of your research findings. The Department awards it once a year as part of its regular lecture series.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student (DPhil) in your second year of study.
  • Where you study: You are in the Department of Materials Science at the University of Oxford.
  • Field of study: Materials Science and Engineering.
  • Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
  • How you win it: You will give the best talk as part of the DPhil lecture series for second-year students in the department. Participation is by selection only and not by application.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize. It is awarded to the best presenter amongst second-year DPhil students in a single department, so the pool of candidates is small and limited to students in that year group. It is best simply to give a clear, well-prepared presentation when it is your turn in the lecture series.
