About this award / prize

Award for Doctoral Dissertations (AISTI)

The best completed doctoral thesis (PhD) in the field of Information Systems and Information Technology (STI) will receive a one-off prize of 500 EUR, usually accompanied by a certificate. AISTI, the Iberian Association for Systems and Information Technologies, awards the prize annually to recognise original and well-founded research. This is a prize for completed doctoral theses, not a monthly scholarship.

Who can apply

  • Level: You have completed a PhD thesis.
  • Field: Your dissertation focuses on information systems and information technology (STI).
  • Where you did your PhD: You wrote your doctoral thesis in Spain or Portugal.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply, provided they have completed their PhD in Spain or Portugal.
  • Quality: Her work is characterised by scientific innovation and rigorous methodology.

How to apply

You must submit your final dissertation to AISTI by 30 June. In the first round, a small group of finalists will be selected, and a jury will then choose the winner. The prize will be awarded at the CISTI conference (Conferência Ibérica de Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informação), which takes place every year in June, alternating between Portugal and Spain.

How realistic are your chances?

The field of entrants is small: in recent rounds, there have been around 14 to 27 submissions from across Spain and Portugal, and only one doctoral thesis is awarded the prize each year. This is a genuine competition for the best completed thesis, not a scholarship open to the general public. If you have a PhD in the field of information technology, completed your PhD in Spain or Portugal, and have a track record of outstanding publications, you have a real chance of reaching the final round.
