About this award / prize
Annual Contest of the Technology and Society Class
You will receive a prize of 1,250 EUR for an original academic paper that answers a question set by the Academy. Each year, the Academy announces a specific question, and your task is to write the best answer to it. Up to 6 prizes of equal value may be awarded in a single cycle. The funding comes from the Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature and Fine Arts of Belgium (Académie royale de Belgique), which has been organising these competitions since 1769.
Who can apply
- The task: You are to submit an independent written piece that answers the Academy’s question for the current year. Your submission must specify which question it relates to.
- Your own work: The work must be written by you. You may reuse parts of a thesis that you have already submitted elsewhere as part of your studies, for example as part of a Master’s or PhD programme.
- Field of study: Open to all disciplines. The topic depends on the question set for that year.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Timing: You must submit your work before the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted.
How to apply
Send your work in 3 copies to the Academy's permanent secretary. You can enter under your own name, or stay anonymous by putting a motto on the work and enclosing your details in a sealed envelope. The deadline is announced together with the yearly question.
