About this scholarship
Grants for Artists in Residence (WBI)
You get your travel and living costs covered for a visual-arts residency abroad (a working stay at a host venue). Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI), the international-relations agency of the French-speaking community of Belgium, reimburses your trip by plane or train at the cheapest fare, including transport of your materials. It also pays a daily living allowance. The allowance is a fixed amount per destination country and per day. It covers meals, local transport, drinks and phone or data costs. If your residency ends in a public showcase for professionals, WBI can add the cost of a distribution manager. For long or group projects, WBI may cap the living allowance. You get the money after the project ends, but you can ask for an advance.
Who can apply
- Field: Your project must relate to the field of visual arts. It may combine various disciplines, but visual arts must form an integral part of it.
- Where you go: The stay must take place abroad, outside Belgium.
- Professional status: You are a professional artist recognised by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (the French-speaking Community of Belgium).
- Experience: You can demonstrate at least 2 years of artistic activity.
- Link to the region: You, or the person submitting the application on your behalf, are resident in Wallonia or Brussels; in other words, you have a legal address or registered office there.
How to apply
Apply by email using the application form on the WBI website. Please attach a letter of invitation from the host institution abroad. Submit your application at least 10 days before a meeting of the Advisory Committee (you can find the schedule on the WBI Culture page). A committee comprising WBI staff and subject matter experts will review your project, and you will receive feedback within 30 days of the meeting.
