About this award / prize

Jean-Jacques Comhaire Award

You will receive a one-off prize of 5,000 EUR for innovative research in the field of archaeometry. Archaeometry involves applying methods from the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, (micro-)biology) and computer science to study and protect cultural heritage. For example, you might analyse the materials, pigments or substrates of works of art, buildings and archaeological objects. The King Baudouin Foundation in Brussels awards the prize once a year through its Professor Jean-Jacques Comhaire Fund.

Who can apply

  • Who it is for: You are a young researcher working in archaeometry.
  • Age: You are no older than 35.
  • Your work: Scientific or computer-based methods must be a central component of your research and must not merely be a secondary task. Using them only after the research has been completed – for example, to set up a database – does not count.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Where you study or work: Any university or institution is fine.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the King Baudouin Foundation’s application portal. There, you will need to create an account and complete your application. For round 2027, you can apply from 1 October 2026 until 15 April 2027.
