About this scholarship
Flemish study grant (Studietoelage)
You will receive a one-off grant of 343 EUR to 5,311 EUR per academic year, which is paid out once a year to cover the costs of tuition fees, books, travel and accommodation. The amount depends on your family’s income, the number of credit points you are taking, and whether you are renting student accommodation. You will receive the maximum amount of 5,311 EUR if you rent a student room for at least 8 months (or 4 months per semester). If you live at home, the maximum amount is 3,188 EUR. The grant is awarded by the Flemish Government. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will also pay a reduced tuition fee of 139 EUR. Even students who do not fully meet the eligibility criteria may, under certain circumstances, be eligible for a partial reduction in tuition fees.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled on a higher education course in Belgium that is recognised and funded by the Flemish Community.
- Study load: You are a full-time student, i.e. you are taking at least 54 credit points. This does not apply to your final year, and there are a few other exceptions.
- Programme type: Your degree programme leads to a qualification, such as a Bachelor’s or a first Master’s degree. Doctoral programmes, postgraduate programmes, advanced Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes (BaNaBa/MaNaMa), private educational programmes, and language or summer courses are not included.
- Age: You are under 30 on 31 December of the year the academic year starts. You can request an exception.
- Nationality or residence: You are a Belgian national or otherwise meet the eligibility criteria. This includes EU citizens who have been living in Belgium for 5 years, people who (or whose parents) have worked in Belgium, people with a permanent residence permit, recognised refugees, and people with subsidiary or temporary protection status.
- Financial need: Your family income is below a specified threshold. The authorities calculate the amount based on your income over the two years prior to submitting your application.
How to apply
You apply for the student grant online via the ‘Digitaal loket Studietoelagen’ (Digital Student Grants Portal). For the academic year 2026–2027, you can submit your application from 2 June 2026 until 1 June 2027. You create a profile, and the Student Finance Department will then email you asking you to submit any supporting documents, such as your tenancy agreement or proof of income.
