Province of Liège - Interest-Free Student Loans

Province of Liège student loan

You take out a loan of up to 3,000 EUR to fund your studies. You repay it at a rate of no interest if your household income is below the specified threshold. The Province of Liège grants you the loan directly. The amount you can borrow depends on your level of study:

• Up to 1,000 EUR for a short higher-education programme, such as a Haute École course.
• Up to 1,500 EUR for a university degree or a qualification from a long-term study programme.
• In addition, 1,500 EUR depending on the individual case, up to a total of 3,000 EUR.
• Up to 500 EUR for upper secondary education, in exceptional cases.

If you are studying abroad or studying in a language other than that of your previous degree, the amount may be higher. You can repay the loan whenever it suits you, but no later than the end of the third year following the completion or termination of your studies.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You have been living in the province of Liège for at least 2 years.
• Nationality: You are a Belgian national, the child of an EU citizen, or a recognised political refugee who has been living in Belgium for at least 2 years. Other people may also apply, but must provide the details of an authorised guarantor.
• Age: You are under 26 on 31 December of the relevant school or academic year. Exceptions are possible after a social enquiry.
• Student status: You are a regular pupil and will not have to repeat a year. Exceptions may be made following a social assessment.
• Field of study: Any subject at upper secondary level (technical or vocational) or at university level.
• Income for no interest: The loan is interest-free if your income, or that of your parents or the person supporting you financially, is below the threshold set by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. For example, 22,029.52 EUR if you have no dependants. Above this threshold, a low interest rate applies.

How to apply

Applications to the Collège provincial de Liège must be made using the form issued by the Service des Interventions financières à caractère social. If you are under the age of 18, the loan will instead be paid to your parents or your legal guardian.
