About this award / prize

Marie Louise Leonard Award

You will receive a one-off prize of 3,000 EUR, paid as a lump sum, to carry out research aimed at improving living conditions in Asia. The money will help you to continue and further develop your work. Your study or research must take place, either wholly or in part, in Asia at a renowned institution. The prize is awarded by the Fondation LEONARD at the Université de Liège (ULiège) in Belgium. Publication costs will not be covered.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You have completed a Master’s degree, a specialised Master’s degree or a PhD at the Université de Liège.
  • Timing: You completed your first Master’s degree no more than 5 years ago, counting from the year in which you were awarded the degree.
  • Field of study: Any topic is fine, as long as it relates to Asia and to improving living conditions there.
  • Where you go: Your work takes place fully or partly in Asia, supervised by a ULiège professor or a host institution abroad.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You apply online through a Microsoft Forms link by 17 October 2025. You submit a motivation letter, a detailed CV, a project description of up to 5 pages, a note on your financial needs, one approval letter from a professor at your host institution, and two recommendation letters from earlier studies. If the committee finds no project strong enough, it may decide not to award the prize.
