About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a fully funded year of graduate study at Harvard University. This covers tuition fees, health insurance and a monthly living allowance. This is the Frank Boas Scholarship for a Master’s degree, which is open to all disciplines. There is also a second funding option: a partial, need-based award for the one-year Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme at Harvard Law School. This scholarship contributes towards your costs but does not cover all of them. Both scholarships run for one academic year and are awarded by the Fulbright Commission in conjunction with Harvard Law School.
Both scholarships also include a travel grant of 1,000 USD (about 920 EUR), a J-1exchange visa, which will be arranged for you and your family, health insurance, support prior to your departure and orientation sessions upon your arrival, as well as access to the alumni network.
Who can apply
- Degree: You already hold at least a bachelor’s degree and would like to undertake a master’s programme at Harvard University.
- Subject: Any subject area is eligible for the full scholarship. The partial scholarship applies exclusively to the LL.M. programme.
- Nationality: For the full award, you are a citizen of Belgium or Luxembourg. The law award also accepts citizens of Austria, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
- English: You speak and write English well. A TOEFL certificate or similar qualification is not required.
- Record: You have an excellent academic record or an outstanding personal or professional background.
- US ties: You do not currently live in the United States and are neither a US citizen nor a Green Card holder. Furthermore, you must not have spent more than 9 months in the US over the last 5 years.
- After the year: The J-1 visa means that, once you have completed your studies, you must return to your home country for 2 years.
How to apply
You must apply online to the Fulbright Commission in Brussels between 15 September and 1 December (12 noon) to commence your studies in the following academic year. At the same time, you must apply separately to Harvard University for your study programme. Your confirmation of admission from Harvard may be issued later, by around April at the latest. Shortlisted candidates will be invited in mid-January to attend an interview in late January or early February. Final decisions will be made by early March.
