About this scholarship
Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation grant
You will receive a grant of up to about 50,000 DKK (around 6,700 EUR) for a study or research visit to Japan. This money can be used to cover travel, insurance, accommodation and living expenses during your stay. It also supports Japan-related work in your home country, language courses in Japan, field research, publications and cultural activities. The Danish section of the Foundation awards approximately 1 to 2 million DKK annually, which is divided amongst a variable number of recipients. The exact amount you receive depends on your project and the number of applicants in the relevant year. The Foundation was established in 1985 with a donation from the Nippon Foundation to strengthen exchanges between the Nordic countries and Japan. Salaries and the purchase of equipment are not covered.
Who can apply
- Where you live: You must be permanently resident in Denmark and have a lasting connection to the country. Danish citizenship is not required. An exchange stay of less than one year is too short to be considered.
- Japan link: Your project has a clear connection to Japan, usually in the form of a study or research visit there.
- Field of study: All academic disciplines, including medicine, the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences, engineering and culture.
- Who you are: Applications are open to students at all stages of their studies, researchers, school pupils, artists, professionals, self-employed individuals and organisations.
- Timing: You cannot apply for a stay that has already taken place. Your stay must begin on or after 1 March (round 1) or on or after 1 September (round 2). If you wish to start earlier, please apply in the previous round.
How to apply
You apply online through the foundation's application system, linked from its website, to the Danish section. There are two rounds each year: 1 December to 31 January, and 1 August to 31 August. You attach a CV, a project description of up to 2,000 characters, and a budget. You hear back by email, roughly early April for round 1 and early November for round 2.
If you are planning further study or research stays beyond Japan, our guide Scholarships in Denmark brings together additional funding options available to you in Denmark.
