About this scholarship
Complementary Grants for studying outside La Rioja
You will receive up to 1,500 EUR for one academic year. This will help to cover the costs of your initial enrolment at a Spanish university outside the La Rioja region. If you are enrolled solely to complete your dissertation or for a final semester worth fewer than 30 ECTS credits, the amount is 375 EUR. The grant is paid by the Regional Government of La Rioja (Gobierno de La Rioja). As there is no automatic renewal, you must reapply each year. You may combine it with other grants, provided that your total funding does not exceed your actual study costs.
Who can apply
- Where you live: Your tax residence is in La Rioja, or your family lists you as a family member on their 2024 income tax return. The main breadwinner in your family must have lived in La Rioja continuously for at least 5 years.
- Where you study: You are studying on a face-to-face course (not a distance-learning course) at a state-recognised Spanish university or higher education institution outside La Rioja.
- Level: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree (Grado) or an equivalent degree programme, or a master’s degree programme that qualifies you for a regulated profession. Higher-level artistic degree programmes such as music, dance, theatre, design or fine art are also taken into account. Master’s programmes that do not lead to a professional qualification, PhDs and university-specific degrees are not eligible for funding.
- Field of study: All compartments are open.
- First degree: To be eligible for a Bachelor’s scholarship, you must not already hold a Bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification. You must not have interrupted your studies for 2 or more academic years.
- Grades: You meet the minimum academic requirements: your entry grade, if you are a first-year student, or a specified minimum grade in your subjects in the later semesters.
- Income: Income and asset limits apply to first-year students. There is no income limit if you are only funding your first enrolment or if you have not been offered a place at a university in La Rioja because the course was already full.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the Government of La Rioja’s E-Office, for which a digital certificate is required. If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must submit the application on your behalf. The deadline for applications is 5 December. Selection is based solely on your application documents – that is, your academic record and your income – and does not involve an interview.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is aimed at a specific target group: people with long-standing ties to La Rioja who are studying elsewhere in Spain. As a result, the pool of applicants is limited to the region. The funding is also generous: in the years 2025/2026, over 1,400 scholarships were awarded, almost all of which were granted in full at a value of 1,500 EUR. If you clearly meet the residence and study requirements and apply by the deadline, your chances are good.
