What the Social Emergency Grants give you

You will receive a one-off payment designed to help you continue your studies if financial difficulties are putting your studies at risk. A standard grant amounts to approximately 250 EUR and mainly covers your tuition fees. In exceptional cases, the committee may approve additional funding for accommodation and living costs. If you have a child in nursery, a separate childcare grant of up to 30 EUR per month will be paid for up to 11 months (up to 330 EUR per year). The grants are provided by the University of Valladolid (UVa) in Spain through its social services department. Bachelor’s students (Grado) can receive support for up to a total of 2 academic years (24 months); Master’s students for up to 1 years.

The scheme comprises four areas: general emergency support; additional support for students with a recognised disability of 65% or more who require personalised assistance; support for students affected by gender-based violence; and the childcare allowance mentioned above.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on an official bachelor’s (Grado) or master’s degree programme at the University of Valladolid this academic year. The specialisms ‘Disability’, ‘Gender-based violence’ and ‘Childcare’ are also open to PhD students.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
• Financial need: Your household income must be below the thresholds set for Spanish state student grants.
• Course load and grades: You are enrolled for at least 36 ECTS credits. Part-time students, first-year students and students who are about to graduate may be exempt from this requirement. You must have passed at least 50% of the credits from the previous year (40% for technical degree programmes). First-year students are exempt from this pass requirement.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other public grant for the same purpose. Erasmus and other mobility grants are acceptable.
• Extra proof by track: For the ‘Disability’ category, a recognised 65% disability and a need for care are required. For the ‘Gender-based violence’ category, you must provide evidence that you (or your parents) are victims. For the ‘Childcare’ category, a child aged between 4 months and 3 years must be living in your household.

How to apply

You should apply online via the University of Amsterdam’s (UVa) electronic portal, logging in with your UVa login details or a digital certificate. Please upload the documents that support your circumstances. The application deadline is 15 working days from the date the call for applications is published on the university’s electronic noticeboard. A committee assesses applications on the basis of financial hardship, family and social circumstances, and academic progress; this is therefore a selection process. In genuine emergencies, late applications may be accepted, provided funds are still available.

How realistic are your chances?

This applies only to students who are already enrolled at the University of Valladolid and can demonstrate genuine financial hardship; consequently, the eligible group is small, and funds are allocated on a needs-based basis. If you clearly meet the income threshold, maintain your academic performance and can provide evidence of your circumstances, your chances are good. It is important to apply within the short application window, as funds are limited.
