About this scholarship

Grants for Research on Gender Equality

You will receive 23,333 EUR for a 10-month research project on gender equality. The payment will be made in three instalments: one following notification, one following approval of your first quarterly report, and one following submission of the completed work. Emakunde, the Basque Institute for Women (a public body of the Basque Government in Spain), awards three grants each year, one per research topic. The 2025 topics were: promoting social change towards gender equality; women at risk of multiple discrimination in terms of access to social and economic resources and to safety; and women’s access to and influence on decision-making processes, including opportunities to strengthen their leadership roles.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You can apply either individually or as a group.
  • Where the research happens: Your project must study and take place in the Basque Country (Comunidad Autonoma de Euskadi).
  • Topic and method: Your work incorporates a gender-specific perspective in its objectives and methods and relates to one of the three specified topics.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Field and degree: Open to all disciplines; a formal qualification is not required.
  • No earlier grant: You have not yet received any funding of this kind from a public or private organisation.
  • No double funding: You are not funding the same project through any other grant or funding scheme, and there is currently no restriction preventing you from receiving public funding.

How to apply

Apply via the euskadi.eus online portal or in person to the Director of Emakunde. The deadline was 1 April. Up to three candidates per topic will be shortlisted and invited to an interview to present and defend their proposal. Proposals scoring fewer than 50 out of 100 points will be rejected.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded on a highly selective basis: only three scholarships are awarded each year; the research must focus on the Basque Country; and each project must relate to a specific topic. Consequently, the pool of applicants is limited to those with well-prepared proposals. If you have a sound, feasible research proposal with a clear gender focus, as well as experience in gender equality work, your chances are good. Conducting your work in Euskera (Basque) is an advantage, and a well-crafted, innovative application will determine whether you progress to the interview stage.
