Santander English Language scholarship (UMH Elche)

You will receive a grant covering the enrolment fee for an English course, amounting to about 312 EUR per course. In the 2021 round, Miguel Hernández University in Elche, Spain, offered two options: a weekly general English programme in small online groups, and specialised online courses in English for healthcare professionals, business English or English for engineers. Banco Santander is funding these grants to help you improve your English language skills and boost your prospects in the job market after you graduate.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree (Grado) at Miguel Hernández University in Elche this year.
• English level: You already have at least a B1 level of English (intermediate level, i.e. you can cope with everyday and academic situations).
• IRIS programme: You are enrolled on the University’s free IRIS English programme this academic year, or you successfully completed it last year.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are from a country outside the EU, you will need a valid Spanish residence permit. Recognised refugees and stateless persons may also apply.
• Field of study: Any topic is fair game.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further funding for the same course.

How to apply

You must submit the signed application form via the university’s online portal (sede.umh.es) and register on the Santander platform at the same time. In the 2021 round, the deadline was 26 October. Places are allocated through a selection process. Your score depends mainly on your marks in relation to the class average, although you will receive extra marks for English language certificates at level B1 or above, as well as for periods spent studying abroad.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must be studying at this particular university, be enrolled on the IRIS English programme, and already have a B1 level of English, which means that very few people qualify. In the last documented round of awards, 170 scholarships were awarded, which is more than enough for this small group. If you meet the criteria and your marks are above the class average, your chances are good.
