What the field-camp accommodation allowance covers

You will receive a refund for the accommodation you pay during geological field camps nights’ accommodation in a youth hostel, an ‘albergue’ (youth hostel-style accommodation), at a campsite or in a hotel rated up to 2 stars. The grant covers these costs in full or in part. You will receive the money by bank transfer once you have submitted your original receipts. The University of Oviedo has allocated a total budget of 3,500 EUR per year and distributes this amongst the eligible students. There is no fixed amount per person. How much you receive depends on how many others qualify, as well as on the committee’s decision. The grant is valid for the academic year to which the call for applications relates.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are enrolled in the Bachelor's in Geology or the Master's in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering at the University of Oviedo. Non-official titles and doctoral students cannot apply.
• Subject: You are taking a module that includes a geological field course, and the lecturer in charge has confirmed your participation in the course.
• Financial need: Your family’s income is below the annual threshold set out in the Spanish regulations on student grants, which, for example, is around 14,112 EUR for a single-person household or around 38,831 EUR for a family of four.
• Nationality: The programme is open to people of all nationalities; however, you must be resident in Spain and enrolled at the University of Oviedo.
• Grades: Depending on the budget, the committee may set a minimum number of credit points that you must have already passed or for which you must be enrolled.
• No double funding: You must not receive any other public or private funding for the same accommodation.

How to apply

You apply online through the University of Oviedo's application platform. The window is short: applications stay open for 10 working days after the call is published, usually in late May or early June (the 2024 window ran 21 May to 4 June). A committee reviews all applications, and the Rector issues the final decision once a year in June or July.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very strictly defined. You must be studying geology at a specific faculty, be enrolled on a course that includes a field trip, and provide evidence of financial need, meaning that the group of those eligible for funding is small. In return, a fixed sum of 3,500 euros is divided amongst all eligible applicants, meaning that the individual amount may be small and will decrease the more students meet the criteria. If you clearly meet the criteria, keep your receipts for accommodation and apply within the short application window, you have a good chance of receiving funding.
