About this scholarship

What the Bregenz artist residency gives you

For a two-month stay at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, you will receive a total of approximately 3,000 EUR gross, plus free accommodation and a studio in the city. The amount comprises 750 EUR per month for living expenses (1,500 EUR over two months), 500 EUR as an artist’s fee, 750 EUR for production and 250 EUR for travel expenses. You will also have access to the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the Stadtgalerie magazine 4, the Vorarlberg Artists’ Association and production workshops such as the Druckwerk. Two artists are selected per round. The fellowship is run jointly by Hangar in Barcelona and Land Vorarlberg / Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria as an exchange between the two cities.

Who can apply

  • You are an artist: This is a professional residency programme, not a scholarship. A university degree or academic qualification is not required.
  • Your field: You work in the fields of visual arts, performance, installation, sound art, audiovisual art, new media or a similar field.
  • Where you live: You must be resident in Spain. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply.
  • Age: Artists of all ages are welcome to apply.
  • Where you go: The residency programme lasts two months and takes place in Bregenz, Austria (in previous years, it ran from May to June).

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to Hangar as a PDF file. Please include your CV, an artist’s statement, a cover letter and a portfolio of your work – all in English. A joint jury comprising representatives from Hangar and Bregenz will select the two artists. You will receive a response by email within approximately one week of the jury meeting.

How realistic are your chances?

Only two places are available, and you must be resident in Spain and working as an active artist. Whilst this keeps the pool of applicants small, it is clearly defined. If your portfolio reflects a focus on visual arts and new media and you can propose a project that fits in with the environment in Bregenz, your chances are good. Please note that no new round has been documented since the 2022 residency, so this exchange may not currently be active.
