What the scholarship covers

You will receive financial support for the specialist course in family, civil and commercial mediation at the International University of Andalusia (UNIA) in Spain. This six-month course qualifies you to work as a mediator – that is, as a facilitator who helps people to resolve family, civil and commercial disputes out of court. UNIA is funding the course as part of its own programme. This is not cash that you keep. The funding may waive or reduce your tuition fees (the full course costs 1,244.50 EUR). It may also cover or subsidise your accommodation and meals during the face-to-face sessions, or provide a cash allowance to cover these costs. The exact nature and amount of the funding are determined separately for each intake.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have obtained a higher education qualification (Diplom, Licentiate or Bachelor’s degree). In exceptional cases, you may be admitted even without a formal qualification if you can demonstrate that you meet the entry requirements for the degree programme.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines. The course is particularly well suited to students of law, criminology, business administration, economics, social work, psychology and education; judges, prosecutors and court staff are also very welcome.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Qualifications from countries outside Europe will be recognised provided they are equivalent to a Spanish higher education qualification.
• Language: The course is taught in Spanish, so you must be able to understand Spanish and work in Spanish.
• Format: Teaching takes place partly online and partly in person, mainly at the Baeza campus in Jaén. You must be able to attend the face-to-face sessions.

How to apply

First, register for the course via UNIA and then apply for funding as soon as the scholarship round begins. An academic committee will decide on your admission based on your degree, its relevance to the subject area and your relevant experience. The funding is awarded through a selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is narrowly targeted: it applies only to a Spanish-language mediation course with a limited number of places, meaning that the pool of applicants is small compared to open scholarships. If you hold a relevant degree, are able to study in Spanish and can travel to the campus in Baeza, your prospects are good. It is advisable to apply early. Please note that the last confirmed intake for this course took place between 2018 and 19; therefore, please check whether a new intake is currently being advertised before making any plans.
