What you get

You will receive a scholarship package that covers your tuition fees, travel costs and accommodation costs for one academic year in total. You may receive several components at the same time: your enrolment fees will be covered, a means-tested grant of 1,700 EUR, a housing allowance of up to 2,700 EUR (up to 3,000 EUR from 2026/27), a bonus for good grades of 75 to 200 EUR, and a travel allowance of 442 to 937 EUR, depending on which island you live on and where you are studying. If you have a recognised disability, you will receive an additional 600 to 3,000 EUR. The Regional Government of the Canary Islands pays this amount in addition to the grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education (MEC). The total budget amounts to approximately 10.5 million euros.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You are officially resident in the Canary Islands, and your family’s tax return was submitted there on 31 December of the year prior to the application.
• Nationality: You are an EU citizen or a non-EU citizen with a residence permit in Spain.
• Degree level: You are enrolled on an official Bachelor’s (Grado) or Master’s degree programme at a public university in Spain, including the UNED (National Distance Education University). From 2026/27, higher education programmes in the arts are also included.
• Field of study: All compartments are open.
• Where you study: A degree studied at a university on the Spanish mainland will only be recognised if your course is not offered in the Canary Islands or if you have not been offered a place there.
• Financial need: Your household income is below the specified thresholds, for example around 15,600 EUR for a single-person household or around 36,000 EUR for a household of three.
• Complements the national grant: This applies to students who do not meet all or some of the eligibility criteria for the more stringent national MEC scholarship.
• No equal degree: You do not yet hold a qualification equivalent to, or higher than, the one you are currently aiming for.

How to apply

You should submit your application online via the government’s electronic portal (Sede Electrónica). You should first apply for the grant from the Federal Ministry, as this grant complements the others. The application window runs throughout the summer and closes on 22 September.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is aimed at students who are ineligible for the more stringent state funding scheme and therefore reaches a wider target group than the MEC programme. It is restricted to residents of the Canary Islands and the budget is limited, so compliance with the income and academic performance thresholds determines whether the application is approved. If you can prove that you live on the islands, meet the income thresholds and submit your application before the deadline, your chances are good.
