What you get

The Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) helps students experiencing financial difficulties to fund their studies. As a rule, you will receive two payments at the same time. The first part covers your public tuition fees for the year: the full cost of initial enrolment on a bachelor’s degree programme (Grado) or up to 2,100 EUR for an official master’s degree programme. The second part is a fixed grant towards general study costs amounting to 500, 1,000 or up to 1,500 EUR, depending on your income bracket. An additional top-up may be available, subject to funds remaining. The UAM funds the programme jointly with the Regional Government of Madrid, with a total budget of approximately 737,000 EUR for the year 2025–2026.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled on an official Bachelor’s (Grado) or Master’s degree programme at the Autonomous University of Madrid and have not withdrawn from your studies.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: You are a Spanish national or a national of another EU country. Students from non-EU countries must hold a valid residence permit in Spain; a student visa alone is not sufficient. Students with international protection status may also apply.
• Financial need: Your household income must be below the fourth (highest permitted) income threshold. For example, this is approximately 16,000 EUR for a single-person household and approximately 44,000 EUR for a four-person household, based on an income of 2024.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further funding to cover the same tuition fees.
• Degree level: You do not yet hold a qualification at the same level or a higher level than the one you are currently aiming for, nor are you entitled to one.
• Regular student: You are a regular UAM student and are not here as part of a temporary exchange programme from another university.

How to apply

The application process consists of two steps, both of which are mandatory. First, complete the online form via the UAM’s virtual secretariat and upload your documents. You must then submit the generated PDF file via an official registry office – either in person, by registered post or electronically using a digital certificate. For the academic year 2025–2026, the application period begins on 22 April.

How realistic are your chances?

This means-tested scholarship is only available to UAM students whose income falls below a specified threshold, meaning that the eligible group is already small. The money does not simply go to the best students. Should the budget become tight, family income will be given the greatest weighting in the selection process (45%), followed by academic performance (30%) and, finally, personal or family hardship (25%). If you clearly meet the income threshold and can provide evidence of your circumstances, your chances are good.
