Juan San Martin Research Allowance

You will receive 15,000 EUR to carry out a research project over a maximum period of 18 months. Payment will be made in several instalments: 40% upon approval of the grant, 20% following the submission of an interim report after nine months, and the final payment of 40% following the submission and approval of your completed research project. The grant is awarded by the Eibar City Council (Basque Country, Spain) in collaboration with the Basque Summer University (UEU) in memory of the Basque scholar Juan San Martin. Each edition focuses on a specific theme. The 2026 (XVIIth) edition focuses on law and human rights.

Who can apply

• Degree: You must hold a higher education qualification (a three-year diploma, a bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification). If you are applying as a team, at least half of the members must hold such a qualification.
• Basque language: You have C1-level Basque (euskara) or an equivalent certificate such as EGA or PL3. In a team, every member needs this.
• Language of the work: You will write the entire project, the research and the final report in Basque.
• Original work: Your research findings are new and have never been published before.
• Individual or team: You may apply individually or as a research team. A team must appoint one member as the lead researcher.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the requirements regarding language skills and qualifications.
• Topic: Your project fits the current theme of ‘Law and Human Rights’. Projects relating to Eibar score higher in the assessment.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the City of Eibar’s platform, for which a digital certificate or a B@K-Q login is required. For edition 2026, the application window runs from 7 September to 23 October 2026. Applications are assessed anonymously, so your project must not contain any names.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very specific: you need a university degree, C1 knowledge of Basque, and a project on the specified topic written entirely in Basque. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small. If you meet these requirements and can submit a compelling, original application – ideally with a link to Eibar – your chances are good. As only one scholarship is awarded per round, your application must be compelling.
