About this scholarship

Spanish Language Assistant at King William's College

You’ll be offered a paid work placement at King William’s College on the Isle of Man, where you’ll assist with Spanish lessons for a whole school year. You’ll receive about £1,700 per month (roughly 1,950 EUR) before tax as well as free board and lodging at the college. The placement runs for the entire school year, from September to early July, which is approximately 10 months. You will support the Spanish department in secondary school classes and teach Spanish yourself once a week in two primary school classes. You will also help look after the pupils who live in the boarding house. The University of Burgos (UBU) organises the placement as part of a partnership with the college.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Bachelor’s (Grado) or Master’s degree from the University of Burgos, which you obtained in the academic year 2020/2021 or later.
  • Which degree: One of the following three options: Spanish Language and Literature, Primary School Teacher Training with a specialisation in English, or the Master’s programme in ‘Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language’.
  • English level: At least B2, as evidenced by a recognised certificate such as Cambridge FCE, TOEFL 72 IBT, IELTS 5.5 or an equivalent certificate from the ACLES list.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The key factor is your UBU qualification.
  • Bonus points: You will achieve a higher mark if you have a better command of English (C1 or C2), have completed the UBU Master’s programme for secondary school teachers, have professional experience working with children, or are involved in extracurricular activities such as music, sport or art.

How to apply

You submit a signed application form to the University of Burgos registry by 10 April. Attach your transcript, a motivation letter and CV in English, and your English certificates. The six highest-scoring candidates go forward to an interview with a college representative, held in Spanish and English, in person or by video call. The college makes the final choice.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single vacancy open exclusively to graduates of three specific degree programmes at the University of Burgos; consequently, the target group is small and there are few applicants. If you hold one of these degrees, have English language skills at level B2 and can demonstrate experience working with children or hold a certificate in advanced English, your chances are good. The university makes its decision following an interview, so a compelling personal statement and a solid command of English are important.
