Gondra Barandiarán postgraduate scholarship

You will receive 16,500 EUR for one academic year to undertake a Master’s or PhD programme at any university outside Spain. The scholarship is administered by the Fundación Gondra Barandiarán. This Basque foundation supports postgraduate studies for graduates of engineering degree programmes. In each round of awards, it awards 5 scholarships worth 16,500 EUR for study abroad. You may combine the scholarship with other public or private scholarships, as well as with paid employment, provided you inform the foundation of your other sources of income.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have completed a degree in engineering (or are about to graduate). It does not matter which specialism you studied.
• Where you studied: You have completed your entire degree course at a state-recognised higher education institution in the Basque Country (Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco) or in Navarre.
• What you want to do: You are starting a Master’s or PhD programme in any subject at a university outside Spain.
• Language: You must hold a language certificate at level C1 or above (the second-highest level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The committee may waive this requirement if you can demonstrate your language skills in another way.
• Almost done: Your degree programme is considered to be complete once you have passed all your exams and only your final dissertation or PhD thesis remains to be completed. In this case, you will receive the scholarship on a provisional basis.

How to apply

Please send your application documents to the Foundation by email. The application period runs from mid-March to the end of May. A selection panel will shortlist approximately 15 candidates based on your grades, your CV, the quality of the university and degree programme you have chosen, and your motivation. You may then be invited to an interview, either in person or via video conference.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must hold a degree in engineering and have completed your studies entirely in the Basque Country or Navarre, which means that only a small number of candidates apply. In each round, only 5 scholarships are awarded for study abroad, with a C1 language certificate and admission to a prestigious university carrying particular weight. If you clearly meet these requirements and have a strong academic record, your chances are good.
