Iberdrola Foundation - Master Scholarships for Energy and Environment (Spain)

What you get

You will receive 900 EUR per month to cover living costs and accommodation whilst studying in Spain. Your tuition fees will be covered in full or in part. You will also receive a return economy-class flight from the capital of your home country to Spain, as well as health insurance. The scholarship funds a one-year official Master’s programme (60 ECTS) at a Spanish university in the fields of renewable energy, energy systems, wind power, the environment and sustainability. The Fundación Iberdrola España and the Fundación Carolina run the programme jointly and award around 10 scholarships each year for various Master’s programmes.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a citizen of Brazil or Portugal.
• Where you live: You do not live in Spain.
• Degree: At the time of your application, you will already have completed a university degree.
• Field of study: Your background should be relevant to topics in the fields of energy or the environment. A technical degree (e.g. in electrical engineering, energy engineering or mechanical engineering) is preferred, but is not a requirement.
• Language: If Spanish is not your first language, you should have a level B2 of Spanish. For the ‘Wind Energy’ Master’s programme, which is taught entirely in English, you will need a level B2 or higher in English.
• Where you study: You are studying at a Spanish university, such as the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid or the Universidad Pública de Navarra.

How to apply

You apply online via the Fundación Carolina portal and can submit up to five applications in the order of your choice. The application deadline for the current round is in early March. Each university carries out an initial shortlisting of candidates. A selection panel then reviews the applications and may invite you to a video interview before the final decision is made.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at Brazilian or Portuguese nationals who are studying for a specific Master’s degree in the field of energy and the environment, and comprises around 10 scholarships per year. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet the requirements regarding field of study, language skills and nationality, your chances are good. A background in engineering is preferred, and a strong, well-documented academic record is an advantage.
