Barrié Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships

You will receive a comprehensive package for a Master’s degree programme abroad: your tuition fees paid in full (up to 50,000 EUR per year), a monthly living allowance of 1,600 EUR, and a one-off travel allowance of 1,000 EUR. The funding is valid for one academic year and can be extended for a maximum of 24 months. It is awarded by the Barrié Foundation in A Coruña, Spain, which awards a maximum of 10 of these scholarships each year. The aim is to enable talented graduates from Galicia to study at leading universities abroad and subsequently bring this knowledge back home.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Spanish national (holding a DNI or passport).
• Link to Galicia: You were born in Galicia, OR one of your parents was born there, OR you have lived in a Galician municipality during the two years prior to the start of the call for applications.
• Degree: You have completed a degree or are in your final year of study.
• Where you go: The Master’s programme must be completed abroad, be officially recognised, be full-time and be taught face-to-face. Online, part-time, distance-learning or evening programmes are not permitted. Doctoral programmes on their own are not eligible for funding (only the Master’s programme as part of an MSc-PhD programme counts).
• Field of study: Every topic, from science and technology to art and business.
• Language: You must have a command of English at level B2 or above. If your degree programme is taught in another language, you must also provide evidence of the required level in that language.
• Work experience: An MBA programme requires at least two years’ full-time work experience.
• Admission: You do not yet need to have been granted final admission, but you must have already applied to your chosen university and be able to provide proof of this (up to three degree programmes).

How to apply

Online applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s application portal by 27 February. You will need to upload your academic transcript, proof of your connection to Galicia, your English language certificate, proof of your application to your chosen university, a CV and letters of reference. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a face-to-face interview at the Foundation’s offices in A Coruña. There, a panel will assess your motivation and your study plan before the final decision is made.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly defined: you must be a Spanish national with a clear connection to Galicia, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is far smaller than for open international scholarships. With a maximum of 10 places and a generous funding package, there is nevertheless genuine competition amongst qualified applicants, and during the interview, great importance is attached to your motivation and your plan to return. If you meet the requirements regarding Galicia and the language, have good grades and a well-reasoned study plan, and apply early, your chances are good.
