About this scholarship
What Global Training gives you
You get 1,635 EUR per month (gross) to do a paid work placement abroad for 6 months. You can extend by 1 to 6 months if your host company decides to keep you; they then pay for the extra time. You go to a company or institution abroad that matches your academic and professional profile. For the first 6 months, the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) covers your accident, health and liability insurance. It also helps with the cost of the J1 visa if you go to the USA. Out of your monthly grant you pay for your own accommodation, food, travel and visa costs. Before you leave, you attend a compulsory two-week, in-person preparation course. The programme is run by the Basque regional government together with Basque Trade & Investment and the SPRI development agency. The UPV/EHU manages 55 of these grants for the 2025 round.
Who can apply
- Where you're based: You have lived in the Basque Country (CAPV) for more than 12 continuous months just before applications open, or for 5 years within the last 10.
- Nationality: You hold the nationality of an EU member state.
- Qualification: You have a university degree (Grado) or a higher vocational qualification (Formación Profesional de Grado Superior). A foreign qualification counts only if it is officially recognised (homologated).
- Age: You are not older than 30 on 1 January 2025.
- English: At least B2 if you have a university degree, or B1 if you have a vocational qualification. You show this with an official certificate no more than 4 years old, or by taking an English test during selection.
- No earlier placement: You have not had a Global Training, BEINT, ICEX or similar grant before, and no previous work placement abroad of 6 months or more.
- Not the same company: You have never worked or trained at the host company before.
- Field of study: All fields are welcome. You apply to the job offers that fit your profile.
How to apply
You register through one of the seven partner organisations (Entidades Colaboradoras) that manage the grants, and apply to the job offers listed on the UPV/EHU website. The application window for the 2025 round runs from 15 July to 19 September 2025. Apply through only one partner, because applying through more than one gets you excluded. Selection has several stages: an English test in September (skipped if you hold a recognised certificate), a review of your CV and merits, then personal interviews in October where the host companies make the final choice.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is cut narrowly: you must be under 30, be based in the Basque Country, hold a degree or higher vocational qualification, and not have had a similar placement before. That keeps the eligible group small. With 55 grants in this round and companies picking from a shortlist of 3 to 4 candidates per offer, your prospects are decent if you clearly meet the conditions and can document strong English and relevant experience. A solid, well-evidenced CV and an early application matter most.
