About this scholarship
What the residency gives you
You will spend two months at La Térmica in Málaga, Spain, living and working there whilst developing your own art project. La Térmica is the Málaga Provincial Council’s centre for contemporary culture. You will be provided with your own studio, accommodation, all meals and a cleaning service for your living and working spaces. In addition, you will receive 1,000 EUR (including tax) to cover your project costs. You will also receive technical and educational support, as well as opportunities to engage with key figures from the art scene. The residency takes place as part of BIENALSUR, an international biennial for contemporary art from South America. It concludes with an open day, when the public can view your work. Six artists are selected each year.
Who can apply
- Who you are: You are an individual artist or a group of up to 2 people working in the field of contemporary visual art.
- Field: Every discipline within contemporary art, including projects that combine several disciplines.
- Experience: You must have at least 2 years’ professional experience in a field of contemporary art.
- Age: You are at least 18.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality and residing in any country are welcome to apply.
- Your project: The work must be an original, created specifically for the final exhibition; it must not have been exhibited in public before, and must not have been funded by any other organisation.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the online form on the La Térmica website. You must submit your CV, an artistic portfolio (samples of your work), a project description and a statement of intent. The application deadline is usually at the end of November, and the results are announced between November and December. A jury comprising representatives from La Térmica and BIENALSUR selects the six artists based on the feasibility and originality of the project, as well as its suitability for the centre’s work.
How realistic are your chances?
Only six places are awarded each year, and in the last documented selection round, 154 applicants from across Europe and Latin America applied – so there is genuine competition. The quality and originality of your project proposal are the deciding factors, not just your CV. A clear, well-thought-out project, geared towards the final exhibition and based on two years’ practical experience, offers a strong candidate a genuine chance.
