About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive 2,100 EUR net per month to undertake postgraduate studies abroad in economics or EU law, funded by the Spanish Ramón Areces Foundation. The basic grant runs for 12 months (one academic year). For two-year Master’s programmes, you may extend this by a further year. For PhD programmes, you may extend the funding for up to three further periods. Each extension requires an application and the Foundation’s approval. In addition to the monthly grant, the Foundation will cover your enrolment and tuition fees, one return economy-class flight per academic year, and travel insurance covering luggage, flight cancellation and medical expenses. Language courses, supplementary courses or travel to conferences are not covered.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Spanish national.
  • Your degree: You hold a ‘Licenciado’, ‘Grado’ or ‘Máster’ degree that qualifies you for the postgraduate programme you wish to undertake. A degree from outside the European Higher Education Area is also acceptable, provided it has been officially recognised by Spain.
  • Final-year students: You can apply whilst you are in the final year of such a degree programme. The money will only be paid out once you have provided proof that you have obtained your degree.
  • Where you go: You are studying at a university or research centre abroad, not in Spain. You must provide evidence that you have been admitted or have applied, and your final admission must be confirmed by 30 June.
  • Field of study: Economic analysis, commercial distribution, applied economics, business administration, economic history or EU law.
  • Language: You are fluent in the language in which your degree programme is taught.
  • No double funding: You must not receive any other scholarship, study grant or similar financial support during the funding period.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Fundación Ramón Areces website. The deadline for applications is 23 February. At least two referees must submit letters of recommendation. You may also be invited to an online interview, which will form part of the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria for this scholarship are very strict: applicants must be Spanish nationals, be studying abroad and be working in one of six specific fields of economics or EU law, meaning that the pool of eligible candidates is small. Priority is given to graduates who have only recently completed their studies and have not yet gained any significant professional experience; a convincing study plan and strong references are also important. If you clearly fit the specialist field and can prove that you have been admitted to a reputable host university, your chances are realistic.
