Salvador de Madariaga Scholarship for the European University Institute

You will receive a monthly scholarship to support your work on your doctoral thesis at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. The scholarship amounts to 1,500 EUR per month for the first two years and 1,800 EUR per month for the next two years, plus two special payments per year and a travel allowance of 700 EUR per year. The funding is available for a period of up to four years, and the EUI will cover your health insurance. During these four years, you may also undertake up to two short research stays (each lasting one to three months) at other institutions. The scholarship is awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), which funds 12 places per call for applications.

Who can apply

• Degree: You must hold a Master’s degree (or an equivalent qualification) in law, economics, political science, sociology or the humanities. If you have not yet completed your degree, you must obtain it by the deadline specified in the vacancy notice.
• No doctorate yet: You must not already hold a doctoral degree at the time you commence your studies.
• Field of study: Your thesis falls within one of the EUI’s four academic departments: History and Cultural Studies, Political and Social Sciences, Economics, or Law.
• Nationality or residence: You are a Spanish national or have been legally resident in Spain for at least two years prior to submitting your application.
• Language: Your English language skills are at level C1 (fluent, almost advanced).

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship application form. Your application for admission to the EUI’s doctoral programme also counts as an application for a scholarship. Please submit your application documents by 31 January via the EUI’s online application portal. The selection process consists of two stages: first, the department will assess your application documents and your research project; shortlisted candidates will then be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is highly selective. You must have a connection to Spain (Spanish nationality or two years’ residence), an outstanding Master’s degree in one of four subject areas, and a research project that can be supervised by the EUI. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships; however, given that there are only 12 places available at such a prestigious institute, the interview stage is highly competitive. If you clearly fit the subject area and can present a sound research project, your chances are good.
