University of Seville - Scholarships for Universities in the United States

What you get

The University of Seville funds study or teaching placements at a university in the United States for its own students. There are four options available across two application rounds. Each option covers tuition fees, health insurance and a cash grant, meaning there are no costs involved in taking part. The amount of the grants and the duration depend on the specific option:

• Cornell University (summer research): around 7,300 euros (USD 7,860) to cover accommodation, meals, flights, local transport, insurance and incidental expenses for a 6-week research stay in a laboratory or library from 1. July to 16 August 2026. Three places available.
• University of Pennsylvania (one semester): Tuition fees and other costs, plus approximately 11,900 to 12,200 euros (12,800 to 13,130 US dollars) for accommodation, meals, induction events and insurance for one semester at the College of Arts and Sciences (autumn term 2026 or spring term 2027). Two places available.
• Indiana University (full academic year): a position as a Spanish language assistant (three courses spread throughout the year) with free tuition, exemption from administrative fees and insurance, as well as a grant of approximately 22,300 euros (24,000 US dollars) for the entire 2026–27 academic year. One place available.
• UNC at Chapel Hill (full academic year): a postgraduate teaching fellowship (a paid position combining teaching with one’s own studies) in the Department of Romance Studies, including exemption from tuition fees, insurance and a stipend of at least approximately 23,300 (USD 25,100) for the entire 2026–27 academic year. One place.

Who can apply

• Your university: You must be enrolled at the University of Seville. These funds are intended to support study abroad programmes for students from Seville, but not for students from other universities.
• Your level (research and study call): Cornell is aimed at PhD students. Pennsylvania is aimed at undergraduates studying approved subjects in the humanities and natural sciences.
• Your level (Spanish assistant call): Indiana and UNC are aimed at students enrolled on an official Master’s programme or the PhD programme in ‘Philological Studies’ at the Faculty of Philology in Seville.
• English: You will need a language certificate that is no more than 2 years old. The requirements vary depending on the location of your studies; for example, TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0 for Pennsylvania, TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5 plus an oral exam for Indiana, or at least B2 for UNC.
• Spanish (UNC only): If Spanish is not your first language, you will need C2 knowledge of Spanish.
• Field of study: Places at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania are open to all eligible departments. Places at Indiana University and UNC are restricted to the Department of Spanish, as you will be teaching Spanish there.
• Priority (Spanish assistant call): Preference will be given to applicants who have not yet received a scholarship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Seville’s student portal (SEVIUS) using your student login by 16 December. Applicants from Cornell University must also email the Cornell Global Learning Office a one- to two-page description of their research project. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an in-person interview in English in Seville.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria for these places are very strict: Only students from the University of Seville are eligible; for most options, a specific level or subject area is required; and there are only a handful of places available (three at Cornell University, two at the University of Pennsylvania, and one each at Indiana University and the University of North Carolina). If you clearly meet the requirements in terms of academic level, subject area and language skills, and can demonstrate good grades and references, the small number of applicants will work in your favour. Prepare carefully for the interview in English and – in the case of Cornell – for the presentation of your research proposal, as these will determine the outcome.
