Xiloca Research Allowance

You will receive 2,000 EUR to carry out an independent research project on the Jiloca Valley (Valle del Jiloca) in the province of Teruel, Spain, or the neighbouring mountain ranges. The amount will be paid in two instalments: 50% upon award of the scholarship and 50% following submission of the completed thesis and its approval. You will have two years from the date of award to complete the project; an extension of one further year is possible upon written application. The scholarship is provided by the Centro de Estudios del Jiloca (Jiloca Research Centre) and is awarded every two years.

Who can apply

• Your topic: You will be researching any aspect of the Jiloca Valley or the surrounding mountains. You are free to choose your own topic, but it must be related to this area.
• Original work: Your project is new and has not yet been published.
• Field of study: Any field is fine, as long as the topic fits the Jiloca area.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Level and age: There are no requirements regarding educational qualifications or age.

How to apply

Please send your proposal to the Centre by email. Please include your CV, the project title and a description of the project, the methods and sources you intend to use, and a brief explanation of why the research project is significant from a social, economic and cultural perspective. A panel comprising experts and members of the Centre will make the selection. The results will be published on the Centre’s website at the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: your project must be genuinely rooted in a small region of Spain, meaning that only a few people meet the criteria. If you submit a sound, well-documented project focusing on the Jiloca region, your chances are good. The panel is also unable to award funding if no application meets the requirements, as was the case in round 2025; therefore, a clear and well-founded research plan is essential.
