About this scholarship
What you got
This scholarship from the Vietnamese Government funded your full costs to do a PhD abroad. It covered tuition fees of up to approximately 13,800 EUR per year (US$15,000), a monthly living allowance, travel expenses, health insurance and other study-related costs. The funding covered the entire duration of the PhD programme, usually three to four years. It was administered by Vietnam International Education Development (VIED), a department of the Ministry of Education and Training. Its aim was to train new PhD graduates for Vietnamese universities. In return, you repaid a small portion of the costs (approximately 550 to 2,300 EUR, depending on the duration of your studies) and were subsequently required to return to your home institution to work there.

How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is no longer available, so you can no longer apply for it. The aim of the 911 project was to train more than 20,000 PhD students by 2020. However, after five years, only around 3,800 had been trained. The Ministry of Education and Training terminated the project at the end of 2017. The reasons cited were complex procedures, funding that did not fully cover tuition fees abroad, and a shortage of candidates with sufficient English language skills. A separate follow-up plan for doctoral training was subsequently drawn up.
